Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert is done for the season, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Tyler Eifert entered the season as one of the best young tight ends in the NFL, and was expected to have a breakout season. Unfortunately, those expectations were squashed when he went down with an elbow injury in the first game of the season. He has not played since, and he won’t until next season.

According to head coach Marvin Lewis, Eifert underwent arthroscopic surgery just a couple of weeks ago for a shoulder injury that he sustained during training camp.

“It’s been unfortunate for him, but this was the best way for him. The elbow took longer. Because you have the shoulder (problem) and the (lingering) elbow (problem) the strength to play NFL football was moving away fast,” Lewis said.

It was a wise decision to shut it down and focus on getting back to full health for next season rather than forcing his way back early.

The last thing that Eifery wanted was to get hurt even more seriously and miss even more time. Obviously, this is still a disappointing blow for both Eifert and the Bengals, but they can deal without him as they have shown all season long.

At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, the Bengals youngster is a matchup nightmare for any defensive player that attempts to guard him. Eifert is too quick for linebackers and way too big for defensive backs. Opposing defenses saw Eifert catch 39 passes for 445 yards and two touchdowns as a backup in his rookie year, and those numbers were expected to skyrocket this year.

Eifert is just 24 years of age, and will have a full offseason to work out and get ready to be the best that he can be in his third NFL season.

Expect to see a very motivated version of Eifert next season after all of the frustration that he has gone through, and that is something that defenses don’t want to see.
