Richardson’s first year with the Colt was underwhelming as the running back averaged only 2.9 yards per carry with the team. In 2014, Richardson only averaged 3.3 yards per carry.
In the 2014 playoffs, Richardson would be inactive for the Colts and Richardson didn’t travel with Indianapolis to New England for the AFC Championship.
Now Richardson has been released. After being released, Richardson shed some light on his tenure in Indianapolis.
Speaking with ESPN’s Mike Wells, Richardson mentioned that weight issues caused the Colts to fine him.
Perhaps weight issues could have been the cause of Richardson’s poor performances in Indianapolis. The extra weight may have prevented him from getting that burst of speed.
Richardson states that he was fined for being 230 pounds when the team wanted him at 227 pounds. On the surface, it seems a bit ridiculous that Richardson couldn’t lose just three pounds.
Richardson was drafted third overall in 2012 behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. He has certainly become one of the most scrutinized picks from that draft class.
It will be interesting to see where Richardson’s career goes from here, and if a team is willing to invest money into a running back that had trouble shedding three pounds. Lots of teams are in need of a running back and perhaps one could look into Richardson at a minimum contract to see if they can get something out of the once highly touted running back.
Richardson had lots off issues in Indianapolis, weight appears to be one of those issuees.
