The first day of the NCAA Tournament began with a pair No. 14 seeds going up against their highly touted No. 3 seed opponents. By the end of day, those two 14-seeded teams were moving on to the Round of 32 while their stunned opponents trie to figure out what had happened.
In perhaps the most classic game of the first day, Baylor thought they had pulled away from Georgia State but took their foot off the gas too early. After a close first half, the Bears stretched their lead to 10 at one point in the second half.
But Georgia State wasn’t done, and with five seconds left, they were back within two.
R.J. Hunter graduated to full fledged stud by hitting a game-winning three pointer from deep behind the arc.
That’s the stuff that March Madness is made of.
Baylor came in to the NCAA Tournament as a dark horse title favorite, and many brackets reflected that. Now, those brackets have been destroyed, and Baylor’s dreams have been crushed. All in the most fun way possible. The NCAA Tournament: where dreams are crushed, and it’s great.
It’s a toss-up whether Georgia State’s win is a bigger upset than UAB’s takedown of Iowa State earlier in the day, but either way, Georgia State players and fans must be thrilled. Who can blame Georgia State coach Ron Hunter for falling out of his chair?
That is the correct reaction to this win.
