At age 25 Jay Cutler threw for 4,526 yards with the Denver Broncos. That was back in 2008 when cresting 4,000 was quite an accomplishment. It was also the last time he played in what amounted to a real NFL offense.

Enter Marc Trestman. In 2002 the immortal Rich Gannon threw for 4,689 yards, which translates into roughly a gazillion in today’s units. Trestman was Gannon’s coordinator. It’s hard not to look at those two stat lines and dream.

This is different than the last time the Bears gave lip service to the idea of being competent on offense. Trestman may only be a mild upgrade on Mike Martz, but Chicago has made incremental improvements on the o-line and taken a quantum leap at the wide receiver positions. (I’d edit that for scientific accuracy, but quantum leaps and parallel universes are how we got the Electric Monk in the first place.)
