Fantasy Football 2013: Top 10 Waiver Wire pickups – 9/17/13
2. Philip Rivers-QB-San Diego Chargers (31.9%)
Last season, Rivers was responsible for the demise of many fantasy football teams as he and the Chargers struggled through the final year of the Norv Turner era. This year, he’s started off back in top-10 form under new Head Coach Mike McCoy. In week 1, he threw four TD passes but struggled down the stretch as the Chargers coughed up the game in typicsl-2012-Rivers form. Traveling across the country to face the up-tempo Eagles didn’t look like at attractive matchup for Rivers, but he turned in a remarkable performance throwing for 419 yards and three scores leading San Diego to an impressive road win.
Rivers spread the ball around well and in the new-look, pass-heavy scheme should be a regular contributor. I still would be nervous with him as my QB1, but he’s a great grab as a backup QB or if you have a struggling starter you are looking to platoon.
Next week, Rivers and the Chargers face the Titans who allowed 280 yards passing to the Texans in their week 2 loss. For this week, Rivers is a borderline QB1 and a very solid QB2 play.
