I know, Boston fans. I’m insulted too.

Jack Eichel, who is one of the NHL’s most eagerly awaited draft prospects for the 2015 Entry Draft, admitted tonight on TSN’s Preseason NHL Draft Rankings Special that he enjoys watching ‘les habitantes’.

Eichel, who is a Massachussets native and self-proclaimed Boston Bruins fan, should know better than to say this.

  • Maybe he thinks that the four-captain circus in Montreal is going to crash and burn the team, and he has a chance to get picked by them second overall? More likely, he’s trying to become one of those “hockey fan first, Bruins fan second” martyrs floating around the league. (Spoiler alert: I claim to be one of those. I still cried when the Bruins fell to Montreal in the second round this spring).

According to his interview with Bob Mckenzie, though, Eichel was all praise when it came to the historic Boston rivals.

“I am a Montreal Canadiens fan”, the seventeen-year-old admitted. “I know I probably shouldn’t be saying this but I really like their tradition and there’s so much passion in Montreal”.

That’s so strange- I actually secretly like the Canadiens for the opposite reason. I think the players are pretty dynamite (for example, I would probably sell my firstborn to have either Brendan “BGally” Gallagher or Alex “AGally” Galchenyuk on my team), but I think the fans could use a dose of coming in last in the regular season. There’s something about a “we have sixty times as many Stanley Cups as anyone else” tradition that rubs me the wrong way.

I thought I was going to like you, Eichel. I really did.
