  • In a two-way split game between the franchises, both the Kings and the Coyotes managed to record a win in their first days of preseason hockey. Each team managed to record their victory via an overtime shootout, with the Kings winning at home in the Staples Center just moments before the Coyotes won at home in their newly-renamed Gila River Arena.

Some notable things to mention about both games-

The Kings, true to form, managed to come back from a single-goal trailing deficit in Glendale in order to bring the game to a shootout. Conversely, though, the Coyotes managed to overcome being down by at least two goals at one point in both games- they tied up the game at 4-4 in Glendale during the second period, and pushed for a 3-3 tie in L.A. during the third.

At the Glendale game, L.A.’s “That Seventies Line” (Tanner Pearson, Tyler Toffoli, Jeff Carter) looked just as intimidating as they did during the 2014 playoffs. This is going to be a line teams have trouble overcoming for seasons to come.

The Kings didn’t only look good in Glendale, either- Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik had some seamless passes throughout their own match in Los Angeles.

The Desert Dogs are growing closer to knowing which rookies will be making the final roster- head coach Dave Tippett wasn’t subtle with his praise for Tyler Gaudet, Max Domi, and Henrik Samuelsson. He suggested that Gaudet looks like a keeper, and implied that he’s been planning a line with Domi and Samuelsson flanking alternate captain Martin Hanzal since this summer.

The next preseason game for the Coyotes is tomorrow, with the puck dropping in Anaheim at 7:00 pm; the L.A. Kings have their next matchup at the Staples Center on Thursday at 7:30 pm, also against the Ducks.
