Mike Glennon credits preparation after Tampa Bay Buccaneers score upset victory
By Cory Buck
Mike Glennon could have reacted in a number of ways when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in Josh McCown and named him the 2014 starter after Glennon started 13 games in 2013, his rookie year. He could have sulked or pouted or bemoaned his bad luck. Instead he hit the books and the film room, biding his time. He didn’t have to wait long as McCown was injured in Week 3, and when Glennon got a chance to man the offense, he made the most of his time on the field.

“I took the mindset of preparing like the starter,” Glennon said per ESPN after the team’s 27-24 upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Even though I wasn’t always the guy out there taking reps on game day, I was still studying and preparing like I was the starter because, if an opportunity arose, I wanted to make sure I was ready for it.”
Glennon appeared plenty ready when he drove the Buccaneers down Heinz Field with a minute to go in regulation and no timeouts. In a back-and-forth affair, Glennon put the Bucs on the Pittsburgh five-yard line with less than 30 seconds to go after hitting Louis Murphy for a 41-yard bomb. Two plays later, he found Vincent Jackson in the end zone with seven seconds left.
Now Mike Glennon is hoping that the late-game heroics, and the requisite preparation and poise shown this offseason, will vault him back into the starter’s conversation even after McCown returns from injury.
