NFL coach challenges could include personal fouls by 2015 season

Generally speaking, the plays that are subject to review in the current NFL challenge system can be measured objectively. Did the ball cross the plain or didn’t it? Did that receiver get his feet down or didn’t he? Did the ball hit the ground first or not?

That standard for what plays can be challenged might be moving, however. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that there is a chance that NFL coaches will have the option to challenge personal foul calls by the 2015 season:

"Per a league source, momentum is building for allowing coaches to challenge personal fouls. The thinking is that personal fouls would become reviewable only via the coach’s challenge, and not automatically.Don’t be surprised if, as an initial step, the coaches have the ability to challenge personal fouls. Eventually, that could expand to other types of currently non-reviewable calls."

Some of these calls would be more difficult to review than others. If it were a matter of something more serious, like a player throwing a punch, or something that can be measured, like whether or not a player took off his helmet, that would seem to be worthy of a review and it might actually get a call overturned.

But if the review is simply a matter of asking if the guy truly deserved a personal foul or not, those might be difficult calls to get overturned even if they are subject to review.

Say this: whoever coaches the Oakland Raiders better go through an off-season throwing program if personal fouls become subject to challenges, because he is going to be chucking a lot of red flags.
