Marcus Mariota is Not Worth Gambling On

Despite his stellar collegiate career, Mariota is still a gamble, especially considering his asking price. Mariota worked with an incredible offensive line on an offense predicated on making quick decisions to keep the defense off balance. In that regard, Jameis Winston is the more NFL-ready quarterback; he has proven an ability to perform with longer reads and more intense pressure.

This is not to say that Mariota will be a failure. It remains to be seen how Mariota will respond to longer dropbacks and reads. Mariota isn’t a spotless prospect like Andrew Luck was three drafts ago, so investing your future into a quarterback like Mariota is a gamble the Browns shouldn’t be willing to take.

The Browns would be better suited staying at their slots and taking the best player available rather than throwing away their draft and jumping the gun on the second pick. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won’t do it.
