High-Risk Options

Tim Hudson. 23. player. 31. Hudson faces his former team tonight as the Braves come to San Francisco.  He was crushed by the Rockies his last time out and is just 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA in five starts this month. There are other options with better potential tonight despite the fact that the Braves bats have had a rough road trip of their own.. San Francisco Giants. vs Braves

22. player. 95. Gallardo has turned in two quality starts in his last three games, but his one rough outing came agains the same Red Sox team he’ll face tonight.  He allowed ten hits and four runs in five innings in Fenway two starts ago, and his 4.13 ERA and 1.32 WHIP make him a middle-of-the-road option for tonight.. Texas Rangers. vs Red Sox. Yovani Gallardo

player. 21. Karns has settled into the Rays rotation and put together a solid May going 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA. Today, he makes his third start of the season against Baltimore going 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in his first two outings.  He did look good in Baltimore when he faced them May 3 allowing two hits in five shutout innings.  He doesn’t typically go extremely deep into the game, and he does have upside, but Baltimore knocked him around in his first start of the season scoring six runs in 5.2 innings which is reason for caution in deploying Karns today.. Tampa Bay Rays. @ Orioles. Nathan Karns. 21

76. Nelson has had an up-and-down year going 2-5 with a 3.67 ERA. One concerning stat, though, is that he has walked nine batters in his last two starts in 13.2 innings.  He has turned in just one quality start in his last four outings, so despite his long-term potential there are better options for today.. Milwaukee Brewers. vs Diamondbacks. Jimmy Nelson. 20. player

Foltynewicz has been up-and-down since joining the Braves and had a 5.32 ERA before his last start which was a great one against the Brewers.  He managed to drop that ERA all the way to 4.25 with just one run in 7.2 innings, and another thing to like is that he has consistently turned in solid strikeout numbers. I’d like to see at least one other strong outing before investing, but there is definitely potential as he faces the Giants by the Bay tonight.. Atlanta Braves. @ Giants. Mike Foltynewicz. 18. player. 17

player. 11. Gonzalez has been knocked around in his last four starts allowing four runs or more in three of those four outings.  However, he has dominated Tampa in two starts this season holding them to just one earned run in 13.1 innings for a 0.68 ERA. Gonzalez isn’t in great form, but the matchup makes him worth considering as a deep sleeper.. Baltimore Orioles. vs Rays. Miguel Gonzalez. 17
