9. Melvin Gordon

Coming into the preseason, Melvin Gordon looked like the rookie RB most ready to make a fantasy football impact based on the good situation he steps in to in San Diego.  Gordon does have to deal with Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver, and Donald Brown, but he was clearly drafted with the intention of him taking over the early-down work and replacing Ryan Mathews as the team’s leading ball-carrier.

While the potential for Gordon to be a strong RB2 is still definitely there, the preseason hadn’t been a great one for him.  He carried the ball six times in the Chargers preseason opener but only managed 11 yards. He lost third-down work to Woodhead in that game who also scored on an eight-yard rushing touchdown on a draw play.

To further call into question Gordon’s outlook, he sustained a minor ankle injury and entirely missed week 2 of the preseason.  His ADP has started to sink and he’s falling into the fourth round in some draft where he could end up being a steal if he is able to perform like many thought he would before his shaky preseason.

So is Melvin Gordon this year’s version of Bishop Sankey or is he truly a draft day value? While we won’t know for sure until the season gets underway, we should get a good idea of how ready Gordon is as the Chargers host the Seahawks on Saturday night on CBS.
