Michael Vick: Top 5 NFL moments
By John Buhler
2. Vick stuns the Vikings in Minneapolis in overtime
Vick did so many things on the gridiron we had never seen from the quarterback position before. His powerful left arm would allow him to stretch the field vertically like few, if any in the league. His use of the play-action pass made him difficult to defend in the passing game.
As a runner, well, he was faster than most team’s cornerbacks. Trying to tackle the agile Vick led many defensive coordinators to have many sleepless nights. Without hesitation, Vick’s signature play in the NFL came against the Minnesota Vikings back in 2002.
Atlanta would go 9-6-1 that season and make the NFC Playoffs as a wild card team. Without Vick’s heroics on the turf in Minneapolis in overtime, who knows if the Falcons even get there. Minnesota already hated the Falcons do to Atlanta winning the 1998 NFC Championship on their turf only four years prior.
The Week 13 game would go into overtime all tied up at 24 points apiece. Vick would lead Atlanta to overtime with his legs. He would rush for a then league record 173 yards as a quarterback. No run was bigger than his 46-yard scramble to find pay dirt and stun the Vikings in the extra period.
Vick did not find a single receiver open. He would explode up the middle and juke by a handful of Vikings defenders. Though Atlanta would win only one more regular season game that season, this was the play that let the NFL world know that the Falcons had an emerging star at quarterback in Vick.
