Time for a deep dive on Norway, our new Winter Olympic overlords
Nor!
Way to go, Norway! I’d like to make it clear from the very beginning that I was cheering for you all along. Sure my heart resides in Michigan physically, but its home is wherever you are. That’s what I’m going to tell my kids if I’m ever unfortunate enough to have any.
I know you’ll welcome me, because that’s just who you are. Take a look at this beautiful quote from Alpine Skier Kjetil Jansrud in a New York Times piece earlier in the games:
"We believe there is no good explanation or justification for why you have to be a jerk to be a good athlete… So we just won’t have that kind of thing on our team. You have to get along with everyone."
“Everyone,” he said. He said “everyone.” I’m someone! You’re someone too, probably! That means we can all fit in and be friends.
The article also mentioned that “Friday night is taco night.”
You know what I’m pretty good at making? Nachos. And that’s pretty close.
Furthermore, it was mentioned by gold medalist Aksel Lund Svindal:
"They told me, ‘This isn’t an N.B.A. team or something like that — you can’t be traded or sold to another team…’ We’re all here for life. [There was] created a culture of unity, and all we had to do was preserve it."
Once Norway lets me in, they’re never letting me go. That’s how I take it anyway.
What a welcoming place. Let’s figure out a few things about the place we’re being welcomed to.
