Kansas City Chiefs: 5 offseason needs in 2019
By Tre LyDay
5. A top corner
Contrary to popular belief, cornerback was not the biggest detriment to the Chiefs’ defense last season. In his first season with the team Kendall Fuller only allowed two touchdowns all season, and was on an absolute roll in coverage before he broke a bone in his wrist in Week 15.
Steven Nelson was eighth in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus only allowing a 53 percent completion rate all season. The only reason everyone thought he struggled was due to the fact he was targeted more than any other defender by a wide margin.
Even with the emergence of Chavarius Ward late in the season the team is without a true No. 1 corner. It seems that the position will be the top priority this off season as it should be. It’s doubtful that the Chiefs will actually spend big money on a free agent corner even with the likelihood that Nelson will walk in free agency this summer.
Since they probably won’t spend money at the position they’ll need to attack it in the draft. Some mocks have University of Washington’s Byron Murphy or University of Georgia’s Deandre Baker falling to the Chiefs at 29. If either one of those guys are there don’t be shocked if the Chiefs go in that direction.
