Kansas City Chiefs: 5 offseason needs in 2019
By Tre LyDay
The Kansas City Chiefs head into this offseason looking for ways to get the Super Bowl as fast as possible after being so close last season.
The Kansas City Chiefs were essentially six inches away from playing for the Super Bowl. All Dee Ford had to do was line up onside, and the Chiefs are headed back to the big game for the first time in 49 years.
Next season will be the 50-year anniversary of the franchise’s one and only championship ring. With Patrick Mahomes at the helm playing in February seems more like a matter of when and not if. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right pieces to plug in to get them over the hump.
The team fired defensive coordinator Bob Sutton after getting schooled by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game back in January. Exit Sutton and enter Steve Spagnuolo who previously the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants before taking last year off from coaching. He’s worked with Andy Reid before so there familiarity there, and he brings with him a different scheme than the team has ran for the last five years. Throw in what looks like a slam dunk of a defensive assistant staff and they’ve completed part one of revamping their defense.
For a team that was second in the NFL in sacks and sported three really good pass rushers you would think there wouldn’t be that many problems with their defense. To be totally honest there aren’t many holes per say in their defense. But they do need to replace free agents or make some upgrades at certain positions.
They do those things at even a competent level and the with a demigod at quarterback there’s a good chance they’ll be playing on the first Sunday in February next season.
Here’s five offseason needs for the Chiefs. In no particular order.
