NFL Recap: Lessons learned

The Jaguars had a REALLY tough matchup in the first week of the season going against the powerhouse Chiefs. The expectation was their defense would keep it close and their new offense with Nick Foles would give a bad Chiefs defense a run for their money. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get a good idea of what the Jags will look like because Nick Foles broke his collar bone throwing a touchdown. Due to the injury along with a really rough game pace, we didn’t get to see much of what Leonard Fournette can offer.

Despite having these factors against him, Fournette still managed to be in on nearly 90% of the team’s snaps, had 13 of 14 carries (we’d hope to see that in the 20s going forward), and one of the best things I noticed was target share. He received 7 targets and caught 6 of them. For a guy who is a bruising running back, I’m very happy with that in PPR going forward.

Nick Chubb, on the other hand, did not come away looking good in spite of a negative game script. He was in on 70% of the Browns snaps which isn’t bad. However, when you’re taking a guy in the second round or paying a decent salary in DFS, you want a guy who is on a minimum of 80% of the snaps. Chubb did get 8 targets (he only caught 4) and also got 17 of 19 carries. His stat line, in the end, didn’t look good but this is a situation to monitor.

I have to put Todd Gurley in the NFL recap. Many of you already know I love this guy – how can you not if you had any shares of him last year? He was absolutely incredible. The Rams still have the best offensive line and there doesn’t seem to be TOO much competition behind Gurley. Add in the coach speak of not being on a snap count and his knee being fine and it’s hard to not have confidence in him, right? Wrong. Despite his super alluring price tag on FanDuel, Gurley was not put into situations to score. You end up having to watch Malcolm Brown come in and snag two touchdowns away. I’m not touching him in DFS despite his salary on DFS sites likely coming in at all-time lows soon.
