Can Deshaun Watson Find Consistency?

It’s sort of like Jekyll and Hyde with Watson in 2019. One week we see Watson put up phenomenal numbers and the next, we see him play extremely below average. What’s the deal? That’s the question a lot of fantasy managers who have Watson on their rosters are probably wondering.

I think the best reasoning I can possibly give is the fact that Watson has had a very inconsistent schedule during the month of September. In the first four weeks of the season, Watson’s schedule fluctuated between some very good secondaries and some not very good secondaries. Allow me to clarify.

In Week 1, the Texans faced off with the New Orleans Saints who have surrendered 295 passing yards per game to opposing arms. In that game, Watson threw three touchdowns to one interception on 268 passing yards.

The following week, Houston squared off against a division foe in Jacksonville who has a fairly strong defense despite some of their recent struggles. Watson was only able to muster 159 passing yards with no touchdowns or interceptions thrown. He did manage to get a rushing score, but his productivity was nowhere near as good as it was in Week 1.

Watson then came back with his best performance of the 2019 regular season so far against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3. He ended up throwing a trio of touchdown passes with no picks, on 351 passing yards. He was absolutely electric and many of us believed that this was going to be the spark to ignite the engine.

To much of our disappointment, Watson regressed in Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers, throwing for just 160 yards with no touchdowns or picks. Luckily, he did rush for a touchdown which was eerily similar to what he did in Week 2 against the Jaguars where he struggled mightily in that game as well.

Watson has a very favorable match-up this week against the Atlanta Falcons. Hopefully, we will see the good Deshaun Watson this week.

While it is unsettling to see Watson struggle in the early stages of this season, his remaining schedule does get much easier. He will be going up against defenses like Atlanta, Kansas City, Indianapolis (twice), Oakland, Denver, and Tampa Bay.

Only time will tell if this pattern will continue, or if Watson can get into top form. At this time, I wouldn’t panic but if it persists, then we will have to cross that bridge.
