3. New England Patriots

In a quest to add weapons, and perhaps to persuade a return from Tom Brady, why wouldn’t the Patriots consider making a deal for Beckham? They have the cap room ($41.659 million right now) to take on Beckham’s $14-plus million cap hit for this year, and not hurt their ability to make additional moves.

The biggest question here would be how easily Beckham would buy into “The Patriot Way.” Bill Belichick had a wide receiver of OBJ’s ilk years ago in Randy Moss, who did buy in but was traded away virtually the minute he was deemed to be declining. Even if Brady is no longer the Patriots’ quarterback, whoever is would benefit greatly from having Beckham to throw to.

The three years left on Beckham’s contract after 2020 might turn New England away from trading for him. But cutting or trading him would leave behind no dead money in any of those years, and $12.79 million of his 2021 base salary doesn’t become fully guaranteed until March 12 next year.

So if it didn’t work out this year, cutting ties wouldn’t have to be hard for the Patriots.
