New England Patriots: DT Michael Brockers (Los Angeles Rams)

It’s been an unusual offseason for the NFL’s most consistent franchise this century. And it all starts with the fact that the team’s six-time Super Bowl champion field general is on the verge of testing the free agency for the first time in his magnificent career.

Legendary quarterback Tom Brady can hit the open market on March 18 and as of this writing, there seems to be no indication as to where he will wind up this fall. And that includes Foxborough, where the sixth-round pick in 2000 has made his home for 20 seasons.

As for 2019, a team that opened 8-0 split its final eight outings and was then out of the playoffs via a wild card home loss to the Titans. In that contest, Tennessee rolled up 201 yards on the ground against a New England defense whose strength lied in the back end and not up front. So could head coach Bill Belichick and the club – which has its share of veteran defenders slated for free agency – open up its checkbook and add the likes of Rams’ standout Michael Brockers? He would be a major upgrade to their defensive front and possibly a cure for what ails the defense.
