NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

The Saints’ draft was… puzzling, to say the least.

Holding the 24th-overall pick, New Orleans had been linked to defensive players and for good reason. While their defense has improved greatly over the years, year after year after year it’s what costs the Saints in heartbreaking, last second fashion.

Instead of going for a defensive player at pick 24, Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton opted to select Cesar Ruiz, an interior offensive lineman out of Michigan. Don’t get it wrong, Ruiz is talented and was arguably the best interior lineman in the draft, but this didn’t need to be the pick for the Saints.

What has to be even more frustrating for Saints fans is there were at least two solid defensive players from in-state LSU waiting to be picked by the hometown Saints (Grant Delpit and Patrick Queen). Instead, the Saints drafted Ruiz to protect Drew Brees for what, one year?

It was a puzzling pick and the rest of the Saints’ draft continued to be just as head-scratching, as they failed to address the cornerback spot or the wide receiver position. They only had four picks and only one of them (Zack Baun) made sense.
