New Orleans Saints Mount Rushmore: PK Morten Andersen

There are only two pure placekickers enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One is Jan Stenerud, who spent the vast majority of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and was a Super Bowl champion in 1969. The other was just inducted in 2017 after an amazing NFL career that spanned 25 seasons, most of that with the New Orleans Saints.

Morten Andersen was a fourth-round draft choice by the franchise back in 1982 out of Michigan State University. He would spend the first 13 years of his amazing career in the Big Easy and remains the franchise’s all-time leader in points scored (1,318) and field goals (302). Five of his career seven Pro Bowl invitations came while with the Saints and he was also named All-Pro in 1986 and ’87. That latter year was memorable as it was the initial winning campaign in team history and Jim Mora’s club would go onto the playoffs for the first time.

He would play 12 more combined seasons with the Falcons, Giants, Chiefs and Vikings. Andersen remains second in league annals in points scored and field goals made. But it was his tenure in the Crescent City that he is most noted for.
