New Orleans Saints Mount Rushmore: QB Drew Brees

It’s somewhat interesting to note that 2001 marked the last season in which the NFL housed only 31 teams. The Houston Texans would join the league in ’02. That aforementioned year, University of Purdue quarterback Drew Brees was the first pick in the second round of the ’01 draft – the 32nd overall selection – by the then-San Diego Chargers.

He would suit up for five seasons with the Bolts and actually led the team to the playoffs in ’04. But that same year, the club drafted Eli Manning and then swapped him for Philip Rivers. He would enter the free-agent market in 2006 and after the Miami Dolphins passed on the passer for medical reasons, he wound up in New Orleans.

As he enters his 20th NFL campaign, he is the league’s all-time leader in passing yards (77,416), touchdown tosses (547) and a few other milestones. And the vast majority of the numbers that Brees has accumulated over his career have been with the Saints.

If you just took his figures with his current franchise, his 65,068 yards and 467 TD passes would rank him in the Top 5 in league history. And there have been few signs of slippage for a performer who’s earned an impressive 12 Pro Bowl invitations in 14 seasons and a Super Bowl ring (2009) with this franchise.
