3. The quality of the defense

The simple truth is that the Bills offense doesn’t need to be one of the best units in the NFL for this team to win a lot of games. The sheer quality of the Buffalo defense gives Allen a larger margin for error than many of his peers around the league.

More from Buffalo Bills

The defense ranked second in the NFL last year in terms of points allowed by only giving up 16.2 points per contest. There’s no reason to think the unit can’t post similar numbers in 2020. They may be due for some slight regression, but the quality of their personnel is still exceptionally high.

The secondary might be the strongest position group on the roster. Tre’Davious White is the best corner in the league that no one talks about on a regular basis. Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer back him up as a powerful duo at the safety position.

There are some questions about how well the defensive line can rush the passer, but don’t overlook the addition of Mario Addison. He’s not great against the run, but he can wreak havoc coming off the edge on obviuos passing downs. Don’t be surprised if McDermott and his coaching staff find a way to cobble together a really good pass rushing group.

The strength of the Bills will still be their defense in 2020. Allen doesn’t need to pilot on offense that scores 30 points per game. Finishing in the top half of the league in scoring should be enough to comfortably land Buffalo in the postseason.
