The Edmonton Oilers had a rather eventful 24 hours.

The NHL is around two weeks away from resuming the 2019-20 season in the form of the 24-team Stanley Cup Playoffs. But on Thursday evening, the hockey world received quite the scare. Rogers Place, the home of the Western Conference Playoffs and the Edmonton Oilers, flooded due to a nasty rainstorm. And the Oilers fanbase wasn’t free from the news cycle after that.

During a conference call with the media on Friday, Oilers defenseman Caleb Jones revealed that he previously tested positive for COVID-19 a couple of weeks ago. Jones did reveal that he was asymptomatic and has since recovered. After missing the first four practices of training camp, Jones took the ice on Friday.

“A couple of weeks ago, I came in Edmonton actually early and I was going to do my seven-day isolation. I had a positive test for COVID,” said Jones, via GlobalNews.ca. “I was asymptomatic. I did my two-week isolation, kind of stayed away from everyone. My first day back at the rink was actually Monday, the start of training camp.”

During the first day of practice on Monday, Jones wasn’t on the ice due to being deemed “unfit to practice,” per Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic.

The left-handed defenseman was the 117th overall pick by the Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft. Jones received his first call-up to Edmonton back in 2018 but only appeared in 17 games. This season, Jones started in 43 games, where he scored four goals and five assists while averaging 14:08 of ice-time. Additionally, Jones blocked 46 shot attempts and dished out 33 hits.

It’s unknown if Jones will be able to participate in team scrimmages this weekend, but it appears he’ll be good to go for Edmonton’s Stanley Cup Qualifying Round matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, beginning on Aug. 1.
