Fitzpatrick enters his 16th NFL season as a presumptive NFL starter. And, to say that he’s been a good quarterback in the league is not a big stretch. Sure he’s never been a Pro Bowler and he’s never been to the playoffs, but he has started 139 NFL games and thrown more than 200 touchdown passes.

Tua Tagavailoa was targeted by Miami early in the draft process, and is clearly the future. It is theoretically possible that he’s ready to take over the reigns at some point this season.

However, a major hip operation in January may make that simply too ambitious of an agenda for the organization; and Tua may benefit greatly from spending the season on the bench learning from the smart, veteran quarterback ahead of him (much like Patrick Mahomes did with Alex Smith in Kansas City).

The other quarterback who could push to start is Josh Rosen. Rosen has been a bad starting quarterback in the NFL to this point, including throwing one touchdown and five interceptions in three starts for the Dolphins in 2019. Yet the potential still exists that made him a top-10 draft pick.

Regardless of who pushes Fitzpatrick, he’s absolutely a candidate to be replaced sometime this season by a young, talented first-round pick.
