Quarterback: Cam Newton – $7,700

Despite two very good performances to start the year, Cam Newton is still only the seventh-most expensive quarterback in the league. If it wasn’t for a goalline stand against his New England Patriots as time expired, he would have been the best performing quarterback of Week 2. Instead, Dak Prescott beat him out.

Newton has three rushing touchdowns in two weeks. He’s been downright proficient on the ground. It’s not the type of running that makes fantasy owners worried about their quarterback’s injury history. Newton slides at the right time, avoids getting his hard behind the line of scrimmage, and he won’t take a dangerous hit just to get an extra yard.

This week, he’s facing a Las Vegas Raiders team that allowed Teddy Bridgewater to rush for more than six yards per carry. Newton is a much better runner than Bridgewater. This whole Patriots offense is unlike what the Raiders saw against the Panthers.

It’s not all rushing for Newton, as he showed on Sunday Night Football. He can sling the ball like he used to. He doesn’t have these great receivers outside of an old Julian Edelman, but he has enough average weapons to put together a good offense. He can still hit 350 yards passing when his team needs it.

This week, the Patriots might need Newton to show off. Josh Jacobs could have a big day against an inconsistent Patriots rushing defense. This team defense will get better with age, but with so many new pieces, it’s easy to see why it would struggle in September. Newton won’t be able to rest on a lead this week.

Other options: Kyler Murray (expensive option) $8,400, Nick Mullens (cheap option) $6,500
