We almost had a Mike Tyson vs. Chris Jericho AEW match
In a Q&A, Chris Jericho says he nearly wrestled Mike Tyson on AEW PPV
Last month’s AEW All Out pay-per-view featured Chris Jericho battling Orange Cassidy in a Mimosa Mayhem match, but the former AEW champion claims that the original opponent for him at the pay-per-view was a much different plan — Mike Tyson.
During the most recent edition of his weekly Q&A session on social media, Jericho said that the Mimosa Mayhem match between him and Cassidy was always meant to be a thing, but it originally was going to be just a second match instead of the rubber match that took place.
Chris Jericho says he was supposed to wrestle Mike Tyson at AEW All Out
Instead, All Out, Jericho says, was supposed to see Tyson step into the AEW ring for an actual match with the former AEW and WWE world champion.
Tyson had appeared on AEW television earlier in the year, following AEW Double or Nothing. Tyson and Jericho had an in-ring verbal altercation, circling back to a previous altercation between them in a WWE ring in 2009 — which saw Tyson, the night’s guest host for WWE Raw, knock out Jericho and re-unite with D-Generation X.
“Originally, I was supposed to work with Tyson at the September pay-per-view, All Out 2, and we just couldn’t get it done in time,” Jericho said (transcription via Fightful). “So, the second match I had with Orange was originally going to be the Mimosa Mayhem but we moved it to the rubber match position.”
Jericho added in an earlier interview with WrestleZone that if he and Tyson ever did do battle in the squared-circle, it would be in Tyson’s professional wrestling debut rather than a boxing match — and claimed he was the right opponent for the former undisputed heavyweight boxing champ.
