Ball don’t lie: 3 worst calls from Week 11 in the NFL
By Mark Powell
1. Missed intentional grounding on Derek Carr
Sunday night’s thriller in Las Vegas worked out quite well for the Chiefs, but for a moment, it appeared the Raiders would deliver a real scare. Patrick Mahomes’ final drive deserves to be in a museum somewhere, as he made a 75-yard march look painless, and easier than it’s ever been before — and I say that with all due respect to Tom Brady.
In the fourth quarter, Derek Carr drove the Raiders down for what Vegas fans hoped was a game-winning drive. Those plans could’ve — and frankly should have — been derailed by a bad decision from Carr. As he was facing pressure with just over two minutes remaining in the red zone, Carr chucked the ball towards the end zone without a receiver in sight up the left sideline.
Carr was still in the pocket, as NBC demonstrates via instant replay. It’s an obvious miss by the officiating crew, and an offense that cannot be challenged by rule. So, what are the Chiefs to do?
Well, it helps when you have a generational talent at quarterback to bail you, and the officials, out of a situation.
The zebras owe Patrick a sincere thank you.
Recap: The standard is the standard, and considering this week is technically an improvement, I’ll be generous with a C+. I also kind of, sort of feel bad that one official was trampled in plain sight. It’s only fair.
