There’s a ‘feeling’ that Doug Pederson is on thin ice with Eagles

Doug Pederson appears to be coaching for his job during the remainder of the 2020 season.

The Philadelphia Eagles are 3-6-1 and a bit of a disaster. Naturally, they are in first place in the NFC East and on track to host a home playoff game.

The Eagles are struggling mightily on offense and a lot of that is due to clear regression from Carson Wentz. He has 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions this season and nothing Doug Pederson does seems to fix the problem.

FanSided NFL Insider Matt Lombardo noted in his weekly column that there is talk around the league of Pederson being on thin ice with the Eagles. That may mean Pederson is coaching for his job and will have to make some tough decisions.

Pederson must make a call at quarterback

Wentz’s contract means he isn’t going anywhere this offseason. He carries a $59 million dead cap value in 2021 and just signed his massive extension in the summer of 2019. But that doesn’t prevent Pederson from benching the quarterback this season in order to try to make the playoffs and save his job.

The Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round for a reason. However, he has only really been seen in gadget plays this season. If Pederson is truly coaching for his job and Wentz is declining, there is nothing to lose by playing Hurts. The only way that would be a bad idea if Pederson can clearly see Hurts is nowhere near ready to play. That is something fans don’t know.

It is truly amazing how fast one’s star can fade in the NFL. Pederson led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory during the 2017 season and has made the postseason in 2018 and 2019. Now he is fighting for his job even though the front office hasn’t helped him too much on offense.

He also didn’t have much choice to playing Carson Wentz given the quarterback’s contract. It may take a true act of desperation and a “nothing to lose” attitude to make the switch to Hurts if a few more losses means he will lose his job.
