Josh Reddick will not be returning to Houston as a member of the Astros.

Reddick was always an afterthought this offseason in Houston, but considering the team is at risk of losing he, George Springer AND Michael Brantley, perhaps the Astros are making a mistake in letting him walk. The 2017 World Series champion said his goodbyes to Houston in an Instagram post on Tuesday night, though he did not announce his future intentions.

“Well Wooston, I’ve waited long enough. 4 years have come and gone, but what a ride it was. Thank you to the Astros, my teammates, coaches, staff, and of course the FANS. Houston will always be special to me. From winning a World Series, To getting engaged and starting a family here, and everything in between. I loved playing here and look forward to doing it again. #WOO #FreeAgent #LoveYallHouston,” Reddick wrote.

Will the Astros regret letting Reddick walk?

Depending on how the rest of the Astros offseason goes, letting Reddick walk could be deemed a mistake. Reddick only hit .245 in the shortened 2020 season, but in his last full stint, the 33-year-old hit .275 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs. He’s certainly serviceable enough in a corner outfield spot.

Yet, the Astros have big plans. Houston is already working to bring back Michael Brantley, and is interested in signing Boston Red Sox free agent Jackie Bradley, Jr. Even should they lose Springer — which is appears they’re prepping to do — Houston has a backup plan.

Reddick will always be connected to the Astros 2017 World Series team. While that’s not necessarily the best reputation nationally, he’s beloved in Houston. That seems to be good enough for him.
