Houston Texans. 2. Pick Analysis. AFC. Current Head Coach: Romeo Crennel. Scouting Report. player. 52

If only because former head coach Bill O’Brien gutted future draft pick capital in his dual role as general manager, a new general manager and head coach in Houston will be hamstrung in an effort to reload the roster with younger talent. Offseason trades of players like J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus would help recoup draft picks, but it’ll still be an uphill climb.

Even the faint idea that interim head coach Romeo Crennel could be elevated to the permanent post shows the Texans may be tapping a deep well of candidates, and some won’t rouse any rabbles. Quarterback Deshaun Watson is the top selling point to candidates, with what exact role current interim GM Jack Easterby might have in the organization going forward as a nearly equal negative. If owner Cal McNair wants Easterby around in a prominent role (or even mandates he be kept around), it stands to reason that top GM and head coaching candidates will be turned off.

If Eric Bieniemy and some other prominent names (Brian Daboll? Jim Harbaugh?) turn way the Texans, they’ll be left considering head coaching candidates of Garrett’s ilk. That’s not meant as an offense to him, there’s just a possible path to a second chance as a head coach in Houston.
