3 teams that should hire Jason Garrett as their next head coach
After what would be one season as New York Giants offensive coordinator, these 3 teams should give Jason Garrett a second chance as a head coach.
Ask any Dallas Cowboys fan, and they’ll surely say Jason Garrett lasted too long as head coach. Over nine-and-half seasons (2010-2019), he had an 85-67 regular season record and a 2-3 mark in the playoffs. If not for a controversial no-catch call involving Dez Bryant, the Cowboys would have reached the NFC Championship Game after the 2014 season.
Garrett was not brought back to Dallas after an 8-8 season in 2019, and he landed with the New York Giants as offensive coordinator under first-year head coach Joe Judge. Despite being without Saquon Barkley (torn ACL) since Week 2, the Giants have the league’s 11th-best rushing offense right now (119.8 yards per game).
The Giants are 31st in the league in total offense (311.8 yards per game). But they topped 350 yards of offense in four straight games prior to Week 13, in parallel with quarterback Daniel Jones taking care of the ball better.
What’s gone on in Dallas this year under Mike McCarthy makes the work Garrett did look better. Over his 13 combined seasons as the offensive coordinator or head coach, the Cowboys had a top-10 scoring offense seven times and a top-10 total yardage offense eight times (both in the same season six times).
Garrett may get renewed looks as a head coach after the season. These three teams should have him on their list of candidates.
NFL Rumors: 3 teams that should hire Jason Garrett as head coach
The Bears are moving toward changes after the season, with head coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace on their way out together. Nagy’s reputation as an offensive mind is gone, and more broadly he confirmed he has no answers after a loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 13.
Garrett is plenty worthy of criticism for the way he managed in-game situations as the Cowboys’ head coach, and the clapping memes are prevalent. But there’s no denying the results he has fostered as an offensive mind, and the Bears have the pieces of a very good defense in place for a few more years. If he has a good staff of assistants, led by a good defensive coordinator to manage that side of the ball (incumbent Chuck Pagano?), Garrett could lead a quick resurgence for the Bears. Fans will meet the hire with a collective yawn, or see him as a Nagy clone, but that’s missing the big picture.
