Bears quarterback rumors, Ryan Fitzpatrick

2. Ryan Fitzpatrick

The Dolphins benched Fitzpatrick in favor of Tua Tagovailoa last season, but that shouldn’t be interpreted as an indictment on the veteran’s play. Miami went with Tua because of his draft status. Time will tell if he works out as their franchise quarterback of the future.

That decision could work in Chicago’s favor. Fitzpatrick now heads back onto the open market looking for a team willing to offer him a chance to be their starting quarterback. He doesn’t project as a long-term solution for the Bears, but he could give them a much-needed boost of energy in 2021.

Fitzpatrick isn’t blessed with elite arm strength, but he’s got enough juice in his right arm to make the throws necessary to keep the Bears’ offense moving. More importantly, the wily veteran still has above-average mobility for the position. That means Nagy wouldn’t need to drastically alter his playbook after installing Fitzpatrick under center.

The ideal scenario for Chicago might be signing Fitzpatrick to be their starter in 2021 while drafting a developmental prospect to learn behind him for at least one year. Partnering him with an intriguing mid-round prospect like Jamie Newman could work perfectly for the Bears.
