Bears quarterback rumors, Matt Nagy

The Bears are finally ready to move on from Mitchell Trubisky. Here are three quarterbacks Matt Nagy can land to upgrade Chicago’s offense in 2021.

Bears fans can celebrate the fact that the Mitchell Trubisky era is finally over in Chicago. Now it’s time for the team’s front office to get things right at the NFL’s most important position. Matt Nagy cannot afford another mistake at quarterback if he wants to keep his job as the team’s head coach.

Fortunately for the Bears, finding an upgrade over what Trubisky gave them on a weekly basis in 2020. The question is whether Chicago is better off securing that upgrade via free agency or the draft. The team is armed with the No. 12 overall pick in Round 1, but that doesn’t project to be high enough to get one of the class’ elite signal-callers. Mac Jones is likely the top-rated quarterback who will be available in that slot but he isn’t the right quarterback to propel Chicago forward.

Instead, the franchise needs to focus on free agent options. Any one of the following three stars would be a breath of fresh air for fans in the Windy City.

3. Jacoby Brissett

The Colts soured on Brissett’s ability to be their starter after one year at the controls of their offense, but his combination of mobility and arm strength is a really good fit for Nagy’s system. Landing him on a modest deal in free agency could turn into a real coup for the Bears.

There are higher ceiling options available in this year’s free agent class, but Brissett would give Chicago a higher floor at quarterback than they’ve enjoyed in recent seasons. He’s plenty good enough to pilot the Bears to double-digit wins if a few things break right for the team in 2021.
