4. Marvin Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars

Urban Meyer wants to turn the Jaguars into contenders sooner, rather than later. However, spending big money on a 31-year-old wide receiver just doesn’t make sense for Jacksonville.

Jones is a decent enough player, but he’s definitely not a transcendent talent. At best, he’s going to be a nice compliment to whomever the Jaguars believe to be their No. 1 wide receiver moving forward. Committing $14.5 million to that sort of player over two seasons represents a significant overpay in today’s market.

Instead of spending big on veterans, the Jaguars should be working diligently to lock up every young free agent of consequence on the open market. Curtis Samuel would have been a much better pickup at wide receiver at Jones’ price point.

Jones has a decent chance to be productive in Meyer’s offensive system, but he’s not going to be a viable starter when the Jaguars have a chance to be a relevant playoff team. Jacksonville should have allowed Jones to move to a team ready to make a deep postseason run right away. Signing him isn’t going to ruin the team’s cap space moving forward but it’s a waste of significant cash.
