Minnesota Vikings. player. 60. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. RB. Ameer Abdullah. 2.

The Vikings’ running back situation is set with Dalvin Cook at the helm and Alexander Mattison serving as a suitable backup option. In the fourth-round of the NFL Draft, Minnesota opted to select Iowa State running back Kene Nwangwu, bringing the running back depth chart up to five players. The number won’t be that high come the regular-season, meaning that one will have to be released.

If there is one cut candidate, it is veteran Ameer Abdullah.

The former Nebraska running back has spent the past seven seasons in the league, three of which being with the Vikings. With Minnesota, Abdullah rushed for 157 yards on 31 carries and 24 receptions for 156 yards and three scores in 39 games. The veteran running back did contribute on special teams, as he returned 38 kicks for 935 yards.

With the addition of Nwangwu, the rookie does have experience as a kick returner. During his four years at Iowa State, Nwangwu recorded 2,470 return yards and one touchdown on 92 kicks. Taking that into consideration, Minnesota could opt to move on from Abdullah before the start of the season. Not only that but Abdullah was signed to a one-year deal worth $990,000 this offseason and would free up $850,000 in cap space, according to Spotrac.
