Chicago White Sox reliever Michael Kopech made quick work of the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

For a second, just imagine you’re the Baltimore Orioles. Among the worst teams in MLB, the O’s already have the odds stacked against them. Next, imagine you’re facing the team with the top run differential in the league in the White Sox. All goes nuclear in the first seven innings, as Dallas Keuchel shuts you down, and the Sox offense creates an insurmountable deficit.

Then, Michael Kopech comes in the game.

How is that allowed? And they say a mercy rule can’t exist in baseball. I beg to differ.

Kopech mowed down the O’s hitters like fresh green grass in the spring time.

Chicago White Sox: Michael Kopech should not be allowed to pitch in blowout

Look, I get it. Every pitcher needs work, including a flamethrower like Kopech. Should he not get his regular innings, it could very well open him up to injuries down the line. There’s a science to the innings limit, and it doesn’t just include limiting the number of pitches he can throw.

But once again, couldn’t Tony La Russa have used Kopech in a closer contest? 8-0 against one of the worst teams in baseball feels like TLR had an ax to grind.

I don’t have the stomach for such a disgusting act of hilarity.
