Toronto Maple Leafs sign Petr Mrazek to a bargain contract
The Toronto Maple Leafs have found their next starting goaltender in free agency.
Since the moment NHL Free Agency opened up, the deals have been flying in. One of the latest signings is a big one as the Toronto Maple Leafs have found their new starting goalie for a bargain.
DailyFaceoff.com’s Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Maple Leafs have signed goalie Petr Mrazek to a three-year deal with an annual average of $3.8 million. Mrazek replaces Frederick Andersen, who is on his way to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Mrazek has been a solid goalie over his last three seasons with the Hurricanes. In 92 games, he finished with a record 50-32-8, adding a 2.48 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.
Maple Leafs got an absolute steal in Petr Mrazek
These totals are not only a welcoming sign for the Maple Leafs, but for the contract, it seems it could be one of the best deals of the offseason.
Mrazek was injured for a majority of the 2020-21 season, only playing in 12 regular-season games and two postseason games for the Hurricanes. He was having his best statistical season to date before injuring his thumb, causing him to have surgery in February.
The Maple Leafs have had their tough luck with goalies over the last few seasons, as Andersen seemed to be the answer but was one of the reasons for early exits in the postseason. They had been starting Jack Campbell this postseason, but as we know, they blew a 3-1 lead to the Montreal Canadiens.
With the addition of Mrazek, it looks like they officially have their goalie moving forward.
