Manchester United got good and bad news when it comes to star midfielder Paul Pogba with short-term security and long-term uncertainty.

Manchester United fans had plenty of reasons to enjoy themselves this weekend. They won their opening match of the Premier League season with a smash while rival Manchester City suffered an early loss.

The good news kept coming with an update on Paul Pogba from a reliable transfer source.

“Manchester United have always been confident to keep Paul Pogba this summer. Also before Messi deal and PSG rumours, same position: Pogba is staying,” Fabrizio Romano tweeted.

However, it’s not all positive news for the Red Devils. Pogba’s long-term future with the club is far from set.

“Talks ongoing since weeks with Mino Raiola to extend the contract – no agreement yet,” Romano’s tweet continued. “But Man Utd will try again.”

The latest Paul Pogba update is good and bad for Manchester United

Basically, Manchester United can expect to keep the 28-year-old for the 2021-22 season.

His performance in the opener spoke to a player who is content, even enthusiastic, with his place in Manchester this year. He had four assists in a 5-1 victory over Leeds.

However, rumors have long suggested Pogba could leave United on a free at the end of his contract. He’s signed up through the end of this season, but without an extension, he could walk away.

The Daily Star reported on Sunday that Pogba is planning to see out his contract and join Real Madrid next summer.

Manchester United are clearly committed to extending Pogba’s contract. The longer that deal can’t get done, the more anxiety there will be over the two sides never coming to terms.

Keeping Pogba this year could be key to a title run. Losing him next will leave Manchester United weakened.
