Protect the football

There’s a really simple solution to the Chiefs’ problems. It’s one of the basic tenants of football: Protect the ball.

Teams that turn the ball over four times in a game don’t usually have a ton of success. Kansas City turned the ball over four times. In that light, they shouldn’t have been in the game at the end at all.

Patrick Mahomes threw two interceptions while Tyreek Hill and Clyde Edwards-Helaire each lost a fumble. When it comes to Mahomes and Hill, the turnovers are especially troubling. When an offense’s two best players make those kinds of mistakes it hurts even more.

As for Edwards-Helaire, he’s lost costly fumbles in two consecutive games. There need to be consequences for that.

The Chiefs can take comfort in knowing it only requires emphasis. All week through practice, Andy Reid and company should be hammering home the importance of protecting the ball.
