The St. Louis Cardinals are starting veteran Adam Wainwright in the Wild Card game. Will if be his final outing?

Wainwright has more than earned the start in the deciding NL Wild Card game against the Dodgers. While facing that lineup in any situation would be a tough ask, Wainwright is among the most qualified pitchers in all of baseball to handle such a task.

A three-time All-Star and World Series winner in 2006, Wainwright has the experience and statistical background to be everything the Dodgers can handle, and more.

Yet, with his contract up at the end of this season, will the long-time Cardinals pitcher return to St. Louis? Of course, this won’t be the case without a contract extension.

Adam Wainwright contract: Will Cardinals extend him?

The Cardinals have already extended veteran catcher Yadier Molina, and it’s tough to see one returning to St. Louis, and not the other. The two have over 300 starts together, making them an outstanding battery. Odds are, the Cardinals will do everything in their power to bring back Wainwright and keep the two together, at least for another season.

That being said, Wainwright is 40 years old. If there were a season he might want to step away, it could be this one, especially if the Cardinals make an impressive postseason run. I mean, why not go out on top?

It would still be a surprise if Wainwright and the Cardinals didn’t cash in on his impressive statistical campaign. He’s among the best pitchers in the National League.

The smart money is on an extension, either now or later this offseason when Wainwright’s had more time to think about his future.
