College football upset pick Week 7, No. 4: BYU Cougars

Rank: 19 | Opponent: at Baylor Bears | Time: Saturday, Oct. 16, 3:30 p.m. ET

Because of the hullabaloo surrounding Alabama’s loss last week, it kind of got overshadowed that a then-top-10 team in BYU also lost to an unranked team. With that said, it was a bit stunning to see how that loss to Boise State played out as the Cougars simply kept ending drives prematurely, despite outgaining the Broncos by 101 total yards on the day.

On one hand, that does inspire confidence that BYU is still in good shape and should be able to bounce back. Unfortunately, they have a tough task to make that happen as they now go on the road to face a 5-1 Baylor team that has only lost to undefeated Oklahoma State on the season.

What’s concerning for the Cougars in this game is the way Dave Aranda has the Bears defense playing this season. Sure, their offense hasn’t been anything to write home about and can be up and down, but the defense has consistently put forth strong performances. After the way BYU struggled to finish drives, that could be a tough matchup for the Cougars.

Additionally, we saw BYU earn some big wins over Pac-12 teams early in the year but those games were played in Provo. Now that the Cougars are heading to Waco for this matchup, that changes the dynamics of this game. As such, they are in real danger of taking their second straight loss on the 2021 campaign.
