College football upset picks for a light Week 7 slate but Georgia, Oklahoma State and more don’t escape being put on upset alert.

Even mighty Alabama isn’t immune to college football upsets in the 2021 season. Call it hubris, but I didn’t even put the Crimson Tide on upset alert last week because Texas A&M didn’t stand a chance. Well, one heroic Zach Calzada performance later, the Aggies scored the huge victory to end numerous streaks for Bama. Now it’s onto Week 7.

Admittedly, the Week 7 slate is relatively light in terms of Top 25 action with seven teams that are ranked not in action. However, that doesn’t save any of these teams from getting put on upset alert this week.

We’re making our college football upset picks for Week 7 with some heavy hitters in danger of taking a loss to either an unranked or lower-ranked team on Saturday. And shouts out to Oklahoma (vs. TCU), Ole Miss (at Tennessee) and NC State (at Boston College) for narrowly avoiding making this list.

College football upset pick Week 7, No. 5: Oklahoma State Cowboys

Rank: 12 | Opponent: at 25 Texas Longhorns | Time: Saturday, Oct. 16, Noon ET

It almost feels like cheating to put Oklahoma State going on the road to Austin as a team on upset alert. After all, Texas at home is favored by 5.5 points in this game. So oddsmakers are legitimately expecting the lower-ranked team to win this game. But standing by the principles of a lower-ranked team winning, this qualifies as an upset pick.

As far as that goes, this should still be a highly interesting game. For one, how the Longhorns respond under Steve Sarkisian after blowing a massive lead in the Red River Showdown remains to be seen. On top of that, this could be a highly intriguing matchup stylistically.

Texas has somewhat infamously been preaching “all gas, no brakes” with their offense and they have the horses with Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy to make that happen. However, Oklahoma State has been quietly one of the better defensive teams in college football. With an offense that still looks like it’s trying to find its footing (though playing the Longhorns could help with that), that could be a fascinating matchup between strengths.

If the Longhorns are able to rebound and get the best of the Cowboys defense, though, then they have every chance to win this game on Saturday. They have the better offense and, frankly, more talent. As is often the case with Texas, though, it’s about executing in these big moments.
