Brian Kelly shocks college football landscape, reportedly leaving Notre Dame for LSU
By Mark Powell
Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly is reportedly leaving for LSU to take over for Ed Orgeron.
Kelly has 263 career wins, which are the third-most for active coaches. It’s a surprising move for a coach firmly entrenched at one of the best coaching jobs college football has to offer. Kelly has access to top facilities and private school money, yet has opted to try the SEC on for size.
Scott Woodward promised a big name, and boy has he delivered with Kelly, a coach that brings with him a top-ranked resume and name recognition. Kelly leaving could have a huge impact on Notre Dame’s incoming recruiting class, as well as players considering the transfer portal.
Yet, until the ink is dry, we’ll just have to take Pete Thamel’s word for it:
“Sources: LSU is expecting to hire Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly as the school’s next head coach. An announcement could come as early as tomorrow,” Thamel reported.
LSU football: Is Brian Kelly hire a home run?
Kelly is a solid hire for many reasons, the first of which is the name notoriety he built up at Notre Dame. While he’ll have to do some work recruiting in regions he’s not as familiar with, Kelly has still built up a legitimate profile over the years.
The 60-year-old has experience running an elite program and can hire a coaching staff to back it up. Expect a group of veteran assistants to join Kelly in the Bayou, should he actually accept the position.
On consecutive days, Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly left Oklahoma and Notre Dame on their own accord. No one could have predicted this.
