2. The Cleveland Browns are going to quite literally cut bait with Baker Mayfield

The world has turned and left us here. Once a former No. 1 overall pick out of Oklahoma, now a Heisman Trophy winner without a job. Baker Mayfield is still on the Browns’ payroll, but it will only be for one more year. They decided after four seasons that enough was enough and would give up the farm to win the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. Sadly, there is no trade market for Mayfield.

This is why Cleveland is, unfortunately, going to have to part ways with Mayfield with nothing coming back in return. Look for the Browns to bite the proverbial bullet and cut bait with their former franchise quarterback. Will they be eating most of that fifth-year option salary? Yes, but some team will sign him for pennies on the dollar on a one-year deal to help get back some cash.

By cutting Mayfield, the Browns can get him out of the building for good. It will also allow more teams to be in the market to sign him, not only from a certain price-point perspective, but an AFC team could sign him that Cleveland was never going to be comfortable trading him to in the first place. It may not be what the Browns would prefer, but you know a sunk cost when you see one.

There is no reason to drag this divorce out any longer, so just release the guy and be done with it!
