White Sox: 3 fan favorites who should be traded at the deadline
By Tim Boyle
2. The White Sox need to trade Lance Lynn
Lance Lynn may not be quite as much of a favorite with the fans as Abreu. After a closer look, it’s not even close. However, his success with the team prior to this year made him someone fans were really excited about seeing in 2022. He was the third-place Cy Young finisher in 2021 after all.
Sadly, injuries have gotten the best of him this year and Lynn’s listing on the power rankings of fan favoritism on the Southside has fallen. He’s still a guy who could possibly stick around next year. Instead, the White Sox should shop him in a weak starting pitcher trade market and deal him before he gets too old, too fast. Owed at least another $18.5 million next year, his injury woes are a hint that it’s a deal Chicago might want to slip out from under.
Is it necessary to trade Lynn? No. That’s not fair. It would still be wise to shop him around, though. Starting pitcher injuries can often derail a team’s chances completely. The White Sox have a guy some clubs could view as a “buy low” candidate.
The White Sox shouldn’t just give him away either. If healthy over the next two weeks though, someone might add him simply for what he can offer next year.
Lynn has been absent for much of the season so he doesn’t really register as a major trade target. His poor performance doesn’t do it any favors either. Because he is more than a rental, teams might be more inclined to target him.
