White Sox: 3 fan favorites who should be traded at the deadline
By Tim Boyle
The Chicago White Sox don’t have enough to compete this season and should trade these three fan favorites at the deadline.
The Chicago White Sox are spinning counterclockwise down the drain. Instead of contending in one of the league’s weaker divisions, they’re looking like a team others enjoy seeing on the schedule.
Far too much has gone wrong for this year’s team. From the manager downward, the 2022 White Sox have problems.
This team can certainly rebound next season and enjoy the success they had hoped to achieve in 2022. They just can’t take it too easy like they seemed to this time around. First, they’re going to have to say farewell to some fan favorites at this year’s trade deadline. These three White Sox shouldn’t be on the roster past the trade deadline.
1. The White Sox need to trade Jose Abreu
Jose Abreu should be a candidate to come back to the White Sox next year. However, this season, he needs to be a summer trade candidate. The reason is pretty simple. Abreu is a free agent this winter. A true masher that can help out several contenders, his time in Chicago needs to come to an end even just temporarily.
The summer trade market for DHs is equal parts supply as it is demand. What’s so great about the DH is how anyone can take on the role. Abreu, a first baseman built for many starts as a DH, is becoming one of the better options out there for teams seeking offense.
Following a slow start, Abreu has heated up. He may not reach the 100 RBI mark but that doesn’t mean his season will be a waste. In the right situation, his ability to drive in runs might be more valuable than ever.
Leaving the door open for a return is important to ease the pain in any potential Abreu trade. One of the most important recent players they’ve had, it would make for a great story for him to win it all somewhere else then come back again next year and bring his championship pedigree to the White Sox.
