The Tennessee Volunteers went from No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings last week, to No. 5 this week.

In the very first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, the selection committee put the Tennessee Volunteers in the No. 1 spot over the Georgia Bulldogs. Tennessee was one of the most impressive teams of the season, as they did have numerous wins over ranked opponents, including Alabama. But, Vols were unable to pick up a win over the Bulldogs, handily defeated 27-13. The score may indicate otherwise, but it should be noted that Tennessee was unable to reach the end zone until 55 minutes into the game. That’s how bad of a loss it was for them

That had the college football world wondering where Tennessee would fall on the latest rankings, considering Georgia, Ohio State, and Michigan were set to rank inside the Top Four.

Well, the Top Three contained the Bulldogs, Buckeyes, and Wolverines in that order in the second rankings of the year. As for the fourth-ranked team, that was none other than the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs. Tennessee fell to the fifth spot.

Tennessee fans, rest of Twitter confused by Vols’ being ranked behind TCU

It was not just Tennessee fans who were confused by the Vols getting ranked below the TCU Horned Frogs, there will also fans of other teams and media members who were puzzled.

Considering Tennessee had ranked wins over the likes of Alabama, LSU, Florida, Pittsburgh, and Kentucky this year, it was hard for some to fathom how TCU could be ranked ahead of them.

TCU did have ranked wins, coming against Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State. In fact, TCU had to play Oklahoma State to double overtime to pick up a win. This past week, they defeated Texas Tech 34-24.

This is not doom and gloom for Tennessee. As long as they win out for the remainder of the season, they are essentially guaranteed a spot in the Playoff. That would become a lock once Ohio State and Michigan play each other at the end of the year, and if TCU loses a game down the stretch.
