2) Why the Diamondbacks should make a trade with the Red Sox for Rafael Devers

Every 2022 National League playoff team has a good chance of getting back there again in 2023. One of the sneaky teams to push someone aside and overachieve could be the Arizona Diamondbacks. They have a roster growing together. Is the 2023 season their chance to take the next leap forward?

A trade with the Red Sox for Devers can certainly put them in a position to get there. They’ve made some more minor moves this offseason, but many have been smart and good fits for them.

Arizona can do much better than Josh Rojas at third base next season. He’s a quality player yet not the kind of difference-maker Devers would be in their lineup. Sending him in a package to the Red Sox along with another piece or two gives Arizona a fighting chance at the postseason. Even though they may need to settle for a wild card, they help themselves out much more right now by acquiring Devers in the offseason rather than waiting until the trade deadline.

The only argument to make in favor of not trading for Devers is they can simply wait for him to get to free agency. This isn’t the boldest of strategies. The Diamondbacks have the assets right now to acquire a player of his caliber. It’s worth a phone call. They have bats and arms the Red Sox should have an interest in adding.
